A Music of the Soul Converses with the Silence
Under the appearance of skies and seas, Marzuk tried to convey inner and deep emotional states, moods. It is a work with multiple meanings : a literal meaning – we see a sky and a sea – but it is also like a glaze painting, other layers, more subtle, can be discovered : psychological, analogical, symbolic, spiritual…
The artist attempts a dramaturgy of the opposites : contrast of the rhythm of the material – impetuous or calm, contrast of lights, contrast between sky and sea, between ...

Esprit de Jardin / acrylique sur Velum, métal sur plexiglas, dessins sur céramiques / Villa Roc Fleuri, Cap d’Ail / 2014 / L’installation terminée 2
The exhibition takes place in the garden of the beautiful villa Belle Epoque "Roc Fleuri" in Cap d'Ail, at the edge of sea. On the initiative of the project the "no-made" group. The request is that the artists create, in situ, works in the garden. On about twenty M2 I propose a scenography (others would say an installation) that I named : Spirit of garden. This work resume and synthesize several of my searches concerning the nature and the garden: a big drawing of laurel-flower on canopy, a diptych in Plexiglas and net of metal symbolizing in an abstracted way the wind in branches, and an arrangement of tiles of ceramic with dead leaves re-take snuff on my series Memory of the ...

Les hommes épuisés / Photographie sur métal / New-York / 45 x 75 cm / 2012
Series of 4 photos
During a stay in New York in 2009, Marzuk photographs a suite of portraits which he names "The exhausted men". Using in a regular way the principle of the assembly and the multiple, he diverts, in this series of four photos, the advertising slogan ”Think different” from Apple to update the superficiality of the advertising and contrasts him with the depth of the real life, that of the suffering of the people. While all the photos were taken in New York, the artist, by registering the names of diverse big capitals of the world, informs us that the main globalization is the one of the difficulty living, masked - cruel ...

De vie intense / Photographie sous plexiglas N°1 / 48 x 55 cm / 2011
Series of 10 photos
The first reason of the age-old journeys from port to port around the Mediterranean Sea it is the commercial exchange. It is in my opinion carrier of an intense, particular, vital life finally because we often exchange there foodstuffs the most necessary for the life. I attempted for several years to photograph the markets of several cities, everything around the world. There is, I think, in the simple way of showing its goods, a sociology and a psychology of cities, regions and peoples.
This work proposes a dialogue between markets of Tunisia and markets of Nice. As often, I worked in close-ups. In ...

La Suite Véronique / Dessin N°134 / Pastel sec noir sur papier / 98 x 63 cm / 2012
Series of 134 drawings, according to Francesco Mochi's sculpture, Basilica St-Pierre of Rome.
This series of drawings questions - myth or reality it doesn't matter - the appearance of the first "image" in the history of Western art : the face of Christ on the veil of Véronique. This name comes from "Vera Eikona" which means "True Icon", the icon being an image representing a figure. Véronique, because she "captured" the face of the "manifestation of God", is seized with an interior ecstasy (or "enstasis" to use the pretty words of the musicologist Jean During.)

On walls are arranged with a particular care of the ceramic works constituted by a configuration of squares. Each of them identifies a scenic space which integrates other elements: writing, tracks of golden thread, comments. One of her is put next to a paint in the polylobed outlines. Proof of filiation between an entity and the other one. The verb and the image in osmosis propose multiple readings. By the voluntary decomposition of icons originally compact, the artist causes some micro chaotic universes. The work undergoes a first metamorphosis just like a puzzle the composer of which would deliberately have misled the original solution....

Le Manifeste dans le catalogue ”Concerto pour deux cœurs”
This exhibition is, for me, a manifesto. Which does not denounce, but who announces.
It is the manifesto of a change of paradigm, that is vision of the world, that will take all its place slowly but surely throughout the century and will become, a next, brilliant day.
Sociologically, the modernity - With the cynicism which characterizes her - is a historic period which ends. One of its characteristics is a propensity to formulate beautiful theories very rarely applied. While what emerges since a few decades, and announces the future, separates on no account the theory of the practice. For example, if we are for the equality absolv...

His vision of painter restores the internal sensation felt in this unique place. By his not conventional approach : tight centring and presentation in triptych, Marzuk offers us a work on the color, certainly, but more fundamentally on the Humanity, through a praise of the simplicity.

At first, Marzuk creates the Polylobes. We are in 1984. A work which excites the beauty of the world and speaks about Uniqueness. Already we applaud, besides the big wealth of details and colors, the remarkable virtuosity of this poet of the subtle.
Between 1991 and 1995, he deconstructs the Polylobes to create 42 Praises to Regard, the series of surprising stickings to express, on the contrary, the Multiplicity. The light passed through a prism and gets out of it different, but nevertheless unchanged in its deep, abundant, exuberant beauty in its constructions as in its variations…...

Fragments of love letters
During years 1976-1979 our relation developed while we lived in hundred kilometers one of the other one, Brigitte in Rennes and me to St Brieuc. When we could, but almost always, we found ourselves to cross the ends of the week either to the one, or to the other one. The rest of the week we spelt. Almost every day. Once a small word of a page, more often long letters decorated with drawings. Of these hundred pages which we had kept for us two until this day, I extracte...

This work is not an interrelation between order and disorder, but a game between two fields : the order that we master, which is under control of our will and the order of nature, that we can't bring under control but which is not a disorder, as explained by mathematics under the name of « chaos », but it's an order even more subtil that goes beyond us. Every day, in autumn 1994 and 1995, I draw a leaf fallen from one of the trees of the small place where is situated my workshop. Later, I select fragments of Olympia Alberti's literary and poetic work. Later even, during a working session together to my workshop, I ask her if she is willing to write the chosen passage, by indicating her the space where has to be situated the text. Work in two hands. The sheet of drawing keeps in memory the leaf of the tree which is dying. The leaf of the tree keeps in memory its life in its nervures. In this work, the quotation of Georges de la Tour connotes the idea of classicism, the monochromy, this of contemporaneousness. Playing with this noticeable dichotomy I worked to its unity that consitutes one of the main lines current aesthetic concerns. Indeed, the spiritual field is spaceless and timeless. That is how art can reach the universal and the timeless.
In his book La chambre claire, note sur la photographie, Roland Barthes says : "Photography is subversive, not when it scares, when it's revuslant or even stigmatises, but when it's thougntful". I think this point of view is...

Séries of 13 stickings done from the Polylobes
I have just spent 8 years painting the Polylobes, which were, among other things, an attempt to reflect the unity of the universes. 42 Praises to Regard is a work of stockings, done from the Polylobes, about multiplicity. I subjected the Polylobes to a "big-bang", and under the appearance of a work of deconstruction, hides like in the big-bang of the cosmos, a deep order. This research closes the metaphysical circle by accentuating the fact that unity and multiplicity are 2 aspects of the same fundamental principle : the law of the contraries.

Art studio reflections. In parallel with my artistic research, I continued to reflect on Art, its meaning, its role, and since 1985 I have noted my thoughts in notebooks. Rather than lengthy developments I have deliberately tried to write short, concise texts, thus trying to participate modestly in the debate on contemporary art, as well as in the reconstruction of a deep meaning for the Art of the coming decades.

Rather than of long developments, it is voluntarily that I looked for the conciseness of the subject. Polylobes: A painted work and its developments
catalogue
1984-2018
In the beginning, in 1984, Marzuk created the Polylobes. A series of paintings on wood that exalts the beauty of the world and speaks of Uniqueness.
Between 1991 and 1995, he deconstructed the Polylobes to create 42 Louanges au Regard, a series of astonishing collages to express, conversely, Multiplicity.
In 2009, after more than two and a half years of research and technical development on fired tiles, the artist completed the first large ceramic sets of the 42 Louanges au Regard series, a majestic extension of this work of destructuring the first Polylobes.
Finally, from 2009 to 2018, Marzuk organized paintings, ceramics, photographs and texts by poets, writers or thinkers to create the Mural Scenographies, vast...

Polylobe N°7 / La Perfection / 1987 Acrylique et dorure sur bois / Diamètre 100 cm.
Series of 20 paintings.
And with Marzuk the image both gets roots and at the same time displays, outbrimming frames, frontiers, genders. It bestows on us, we who are filled with the splendour of its warm, subtle living colours. Itdares, with a quiet evidence, make unusualpictural writings meet. It is meticulously figurative, though at times abstract. The letter finds its place in it : greek, arabic, chinese, coptic or phoenician. There is also some cabala and surrealism and the free efflorescence of ornamentation. But at no time that diversity is chaotic, everything cooperate to give a deep and mysterious feeling of unity.

Hiroshima-The Death

Hiroshima-La Mort / Glycérophtalique / 36 rue Liancourt, Paris / 1969 / Photo Alain Sabatier
1969. The time is nihilist and rebel, this half-public and half-private performance is daily done. The painter covers day after day his flat, which is also his studio, with ashen paint. By this desperate meditation, André Marzuk portrays a criticism of the society, he casts his own difficulties to find a meaning to his artistical involvement.
Dany Ropart
In Hiroshima-The Death, I could have put a hyperrealistic model of a human being, itself painted in gray-mauve in order to show the Humanity, dead. But with no human being, it was stronger. That meant : the...

The Paris years
catalogue
1966-1971
Youth works. At the age of 16, in 1964, André Marzuk began his first art school in Nice. In 1966, at the age of 18, he left Nice and the National School of Decorative Arts and went to Paris where he was admitted to the entrance examination to the National School of Fine Arts. Four and a half years will follow which will prove to be important in the continuation of his training and the confirmation of his passion for painting and drawing. The artist seeks himself and evolves at full speed to integrate within himself the history of modern art, and free himself from it in order to become, little by little, himself.
This book reveals the early works of this tireless researcher and the diversity of ...
